On October 31, 2008 at 9:15 A.M. members of the Elk Grove Village Police Department responded to a home in the 1500 block of White Trail in reference to a check for well-being. The resident, a 70 year-old female identified as Marilyn M. Wood, had not reported to work that morning and her co-workers became concerned for her well-being. Elk Grove Village Police officers arrived at the home and finding the home unsecured, made entry. The officers found the resident/victim, Marilyn Wood, in the basement of the home, bound and gagged, the apparent victim of a murder. Marilyn Wood suffered multiple injuries to the head and body from an apparent beating.

During the evening of October 31, 2008 Jonathon Wood was seen driving the victim's car in the vicinity of the victim's house. When Elk Grove Village Police officers attempted to stop the vehicle it fled at a high rate of speed. Officers pursued the vehicle to Glencoe, IL where the pursuit terminated and Jonathon Wood was taken into custody.
