RECYCLING SAVES YOU MONEY!

Recycling benefits Elk Grove residents directly in several important ways. By recycling, you help to:

Improve our environment;
Preserve natural resources;
Conserve precious landfill capacity; and,
Avoid expensive landfill disposal charges.

Each ton of refuse that is landfilled costs residents approximately $50.00 in disposal fees. Since there is no disposal fee on recyclables, your recycling efforts will hold down the cost of future refuse bills.

To save money, we must all recycle as many items as possible! Let's work together to make a difference.

ELK GROVE VILLAGE ON THE CUTTING EDGE!

Elk Grove Village was one of the first municipalities in the State of Illinois to offer a curbside recycling program to its residents. Nearly twenty years later, Village residents divert over 40% of all solid waste from local landfills.

RESIDENTS BENEFIT FROM AN EXTENSIVE RECYCLING PROGRAM

The Village of Elk Grove provides an extensive recycling program to all Village residents. Recyclable materials are collected on the same day as your refuse. Simply place the recycling bin at the curb alongside your other refuse containers. Residents of apartment complexes need to follow the rules established by your property owner for recycling.

Yard Waste Collection :

Illinois took a major step to meet the solid waste disposal problem in 1990 when yard waste was banned from Illinois landfills. The law mandates that no person may dispose of yard waste at a landfill or mix it with other municipal garbage or waste. Yard waste includes leaves, brush, grass clippings, garden waste, and tree and brush trimmings.

Under the Village collection program, yard waste must be placed in 30-gallon biodegradable "yard waste type" paper bag, unlined 30-gallon rigid metal or plastic garbage can, or in the 90-gallon wheeled containers available through Waste Management.

Plastic bags may not be used for any yard waste, and will not be picked up by Waste Management.

Each homeowner participating in the program will be required to purchase a sticker(s). Each sticker costs $1.25, which covers the cost of pick up and disposal of the yard waste. Residents shall affix one (1) sticker on each 30-gallon container (paper bag, metal/plastic trashcan) or three (3) on each 90-gallon wheeled container.

Residents must face the sticker on the street side of the container(s) for proper pick up.

Stickers are available for purchase at the Village Municipal Complex and at a number of retail outlets. Please call the Health Department for locations.

REMEMBER: You must not mix yard waste with household trash. Waste Management, by law, cannot dispose of this waste mixture at any landfill and will not pick up your container.

If you have any brush or tree trimmings, cut them up and bind them into bundles of no more that four (4) feet in length, two (2) feet in diameter and weighing no more than fifty (50) pounds per bundle. Tree trimmings and branches cannot be wider than three and a half (3.5) inches in diameter. Please do not bind the bundle with wire or nylon cord.

No sticker is required for brush or tree trimmings as long as they are prepared properly.

Fall Leaf Collection:

In the fall, the Village conducts a curbside leaf collection program at no additional charge to the residents. The Village is divided into nine (9) sections. Each section will receive pick up service four (4) times, once every two weeks.

Click here for Fall Leaf Collection rules and schedule.

Branch Collection:

Every April the Village Public Works Department conducts a large branch collection program. Only branches larger than three and one half (3.5) inches to eight (8) inches will be picked up. Branches must be stacked in the parkway with the cut end pointing to the curb. Contact the Public Works Department at (847) 734-8800, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to arrange for pick up.

The Village will only pick up large branches from residents who have called in their address to the Public Works Department by no later than 4:30 p.m. on the Monday of the week of your scheduled pick up. Click here for the pick-up week in your area.

Composting:

The Village of Elk Grove encourages mulching and composting as long as it is done properly, in compliance with local ordinances. Please visit or contact the Health Department at 357-4240 for an informative brochure on this topic.

White Goods such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, water heaters, and stoves must be recycled by law. They contain chemicals sealed in the unit such as mercury in switches, and CFC's. These chemicals must be removed and disposed of by properly trained technicians.
